Presenter:  Dr. Charles Nmai

Bio:  Dr. Charles K. Nmai is Head of Engineering at Master Builders Solutions in Beachwood, Ohio, USA where his responsibilities include providing technical leadership and strategic guidance in the marketing of admixtures, fibers, high-performance concrete technologies, and technology transfer. A Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Dr. Nmai is the immediate Past President of ACI (2022-2023), a member of ACI’s Board of Direction and Executive Committee, and a member of several other board, technical and educational committees. He is also a member of the Board of Direction of NEU, an ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon-Neutral Concrete, an honorary member of ASTM Committee C09, and a past-president of the Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Association (FRCA). Dr. Nmai is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Ohio.

Synopsis:  In April 2019, the City Council of the City and County of Honolulu passed Resolution No. 18-283 regarding the use of CO2 mineralization in concrete and similarly House Bill No. 2266 was passed by the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2022. In 2024, the concrete industry in Hawaii will begin the transition to ASTM C595 Type IL cement in the latest chapter of the quest for low-carbon concrete. Other options for low-carbon concrete are also commercially available. What should design professionals know about Type IL cement and the other sustainability options being introduced into the concrete industry and their potential impacts on concrete properties? This presentation will provide concise details on the various options currently available for low-carbon concrete in the State of Hawaii to help design professionals make informed decisions beyond “marketing hype” and manage expectations.
