Title:  Current Status of Building Codes in Hawaii

Speaker Lyle Carden, Ph.D., P.E., Martin, Chock & Carden, Inc.

Bio Lyle has been a structural engineer at Martin, Chock & Carden since November 2005.  He is involved in structural engineering projects, multi-hazard mitigation planning, climate adaptation, post-disaster reconnaissance and research projects.

He is a Member of the Hawaii State Building Code Council, Chair of the SEAOH Building Code Committee and is also on the Board of Directors for the Applied Technology Council, which has the mission of advancing engineering research into practice and providing training for post-disaster structural engineering efforts.

He completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, studying the design of bridges and buildings for the effects of large magnitude earthquakes and has since studied design for other extreme events including hurricanes, tsunamis and hazards impacted by climate.  He has Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering Degrees from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.  He is also a PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant.

Abstract:  Provide the current status of the State Building Code and county adoptions.  Provide a review of recently evolving subjects pertaining to structural design, including: wind mapping; wind design; safe room design; tsunami design; chloride exposure in buildings; and existing building provisions.
