  • Dave and Busters

Registration is closed

Please join us for an IN PERSON SEAOH training meeting on Friday, May 27, 2022 beginning at 11:30am at Dave and Busters.  The presentation will feature Kent Sasaki, SE of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates San Francisco office and will focus on creep failure of conventionally-reinforced concrete bridges in California. Cost for attendance will be $35 for SEAOH members and $45 for non-members, which includes a light lunch and non-alcoholic beverages. Payments will be accepted at the door by credit card.

Kent will discuss the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete highway bridges in California. After routine visual inspections, one bridge on Interstate 40 in the Mojave desert in southern California was found to have shear failure in its concrete girders. Subsequent inspections found a total of 12 bridges with similar damage. The bridges were immediately shored and eventually replaced. Kent will discuss the failure investigation of the cause of these failures, which are the first known fatigue failures of RC bridges in the United States.

Kent has more than 30 years of experience investigating damage to structures, including earthquake damage to the Washington Monument and earthquake damage to the Mauna Kea resort. He is a Principal and a former board of director with WJE. He is a commissioner on California Building Standards Commission, who reviews and approves all building codes in California. He is a forensic expert for the City of San Francisco and the State of California. He grew up near Sacramento, California, received his bachelors and masters of engineering degrees from UC Berkeley, and lives in Walnut Creek in the SF bay area. He is an avid runner, cyclist, swimmer, and triathlete.
