Please join us for an IN PERSON combined ASCE/SEAOH training presentation on Thursday, March 24, 2022 beginning at 5:00pm at Terry's Place (former HASR Bistro).  Lyle Carden of Martin Chock and Carden, Inc. will be presenting on the current state of Building Codes in Hawaii, in which he will provide a review of recently evolving subjects including: wind and safe room design, chloride exposure in buildings, existing buildings and inspection requirements, and provide the current status of the state building code and county adoptions. Cost for attendance will be $45 for SEAOH members and $55 for non-members, which includes buffet-style dinner and a no-host bar. Payments will be accepted at the door by credit card.  The event is limited to the first 20 SEAOH members who RSVP.  

Lyle has been a structural engineer at Martin, Chock & Carden since November 2005, actively involved in the design of new buildings, renovations, multi-hazard mitigation planning, post-disaster reconnaissance and research projects.  He is a Member of the Hawaii State Building Code Council and the Chair leading the Building Code Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of Hawaii.  Lyle is also a participant on the NCSEA existing building code committee and on the Board of Directors for the Applied Technology Council, will a mission of advancing engineering research into practice. Lyle completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. There he studied the design of bridges and buildings for the effects of large magnitude earthquakes with further expertise in design for other extreme events including hurricanes, tsunamis and climate change mitigation. He has Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering Degrees from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He is also a Certified Passive House Consultant with PHIUS. In the past, Lyle taught an adjunct lecturer at the University of Hawaii and teaches a Professional Engineer review course.
